The Governments paper on drinking, ‘Responsible Drinking: The Governments Proposal 2005', identifies that in 2002/03, 1.2 million violent crimes were alcohol related and 44% of all violent crimes were fuelled by alcohol. 35% of all attendances at hospital accident and emergency departments were related to alcohol as were 70% of those which occur between midnight and 5am ……

The drug scene of heroin, cocaine, ecstasy, speed, cannabis, crack etc is becoming more widespread, with an estimated 250,000+ adults having a drug dependency problem. We are no longer in a position to say that substance use, in whatever form, does not affect us and never will come knocking on our door or the door of someone close to us. It is also easy to say that drug use affects:

	the homeless
	the unemployed
	the socially excluded
	those generally in a disadvantaged position.

However, this is not the case.
