When we decided to write this book, we first considered our personal experience of crack cocaine training in the early 1990’s. We did not recall the training as a positive experience in particular, as the information being delivered was confusing, and the trainer had very little experience of working directly with crack cocaine service users. The majority of the training was spent looking at the history and the pharmacology of the drug. When we then found ourselves in front of a client, it was hard to imagine how it might help them to know that cocaine was found in an Egyptian tomb many, many years ago! At a more recent training event we found once again that the facilitator spent a lot of time focusing on the pharmacological impact of crack cocaine on the user, leaving little or no time to focus on the engagement of the crack cocaine service user – an aspect that we felt should surely be the priority. The immediate thought that came to mind was how little that crack cocaine training had changed over the years.
